Her Story

The Honorable Tyra McCollum has been proud to call Fort Bend County her home since elementary school. She grew up in Missouri City, Texas, where she attended E.A. Jones Elementary and Missouri City Jr. High. She is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Willowridge High School, where she is recognized as an Inaugural Inductee on the Willowridge Wall of Honor. Judge McCollum is a first-generation college graduate earning a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) from the University of Texas and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Houston Law Center.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Inspired by her Willowridge alma mater's motto of "Class and Character," Judge McCollum committed her efforts to community and civic engagement from the earliest opportunities. As a collegiate member and President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she prioritized community initiatives in the East Austin community alongside her peers, and aa a new attorney in Tyler, Texas, she served on the Board of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, helping to support small business efforts.

After settling back into her Fort Bend County roots, Judge McCollum became actively engaged in her philanthropic work for all children through her leadership in Jack and Jill of America, Inc,. and more recently through her continued active membership in her sorority and The Links, Incorporated. She enjoys speaking at school Career Day programs and making community presentations on educational and civic empowerment topics.

Justice with Compassion

As the daughter of a Marine, Judge McCollum is wholly committed to her work as the Presiding Judge of the county's Veterans Court, helping veterans navigate their challenges and achieve lasting stability within the community. Her appointment to the statewide Judicial Commission on Mental Health advances her interests in developing resources in the justice system that futher promote mental health initiatives and awareness.

Beyond the bench, Judge McCollum enjoys teaching Trial Advocacy as an adjunct at the University of Houston Law Center, sharing her practical experience and insight with the next generation of young lawyers. By prioritizing fairness through sound interpretation of the law, Judge McCollum embraces her duty to provide a courtroom environment centered on accountability and rehabilitation. She is honored to be entrusted by the community with the responsibilities of this Court.
